Durian Jam

Durian. King of all fruits. (I wonder why it was known as the" king" when so many people can't stand the smell) My husband and his brothers and sisters are crazy for durian. I and my eldest son likes durian but not so crazy. My youngest son never likes the fruit but loves to eat durian cake, durian tart, durian ice-cream, durian jam or any type of cooking with durian. He is a strange boy, hah hah hah. One of my niece don't like the fruit too. When ever my in-laws organize a "Durian Party" (at least once a year, during Durian season) these 2 fellow will be watching t.v or at computer games. They won't even look at it.

This a simple resipe that a friend thought me many years ago. Anyway Durian season is over now (in Malaysia). Those who would like to try this resipe would have to wait till next year.

Ingredients:
Durian, sugar and coconut milk. That's all.

Cooking:
Just put all the durians (together with the seeds), sugar and coconut milk in a pot and bring it to a boil. Make sure coconut milk covers all the durians. Sugar, up to you. I put rock sugar. You need more sugar because we are going to chill it before we serve and once it is cold it would taste less sweet.

Keep stirring untill you can see the flesh is remove from the seeds. By now the paste would look thick. Remove all the seeds. If at this point you still find it watery, add a bit of corn starch. Dilute the corn starch in water before pouring into the mixture.

Once it comes to a boil and is thick enough, remove from heat. You could eat it right away like porridge. I prefer to chill it and spread it on bread. My 2 sons eat it like ice-cream.

Happy trying for those durian lovers out there and thanks for reading.

A Woman's Age

At a dinner party, several of the guests were arguing whether men or women were more trustworthy. "No woman," said one man scornfully, "can keep a secret."

"I don't know about that," said a woman guest. "I have kept my age a secret since I was twenty-one."

"You'll let it out some day," the man insisted.

"I hardly think so," responded the lady. "When a woman has kept a secret for twenty-nine years, she can keep it forever!"

Just for laughs. Hope you did laugh. Thanks for reading.

Guess Who Is In The Neighbourhood

I used to see stray cats and dogs in my backyard. My back door (kitchen) is near my sink. I spent most of my time washing plates etc. When I am washing I like to look out the window and door. Most of the time I see stray cats and dogs. Occasionally a bird or two and rats at night. Once a gigantic rodent, the size of an adult cat, ran by.

These days, I spotted a new stray. Guess who I spotted, snooping around my neighbor's house. It looks like it is searching for something. Food I guess. Seen it a few times. At last I manage to catch it - on video only. (I am not really a fan of creepy crawler) I had neighbors planning to trap it. It was last seen last week. I wonder where could it be hiding. Houses every where. There's no bushes thick enough to hide. Hmmmm. Hope it will migrate to a safer place. There are Chinese family here who don't mind having it for dinner. Oh my goodness, hope they are joking. Run for your life dear, and fast. Wouldn't be nice ending up in someone's dining table.

Just a busybody who wanted to show you what I saw. Thanks for reading.

Intimate Time

I have heard numerous stories about children sleeping in the same room, some even same bed, as their parents till their children are very old. Is it due to lack of space or parents just need to have them by their side all the time? When should we let go? Does this only happen in Malaysia, Asia or all over the world?

I trained my two boys since young. The day I took him home from the hospital, I would place him in a cot in a corner of my room. Wanted him to learn to sleep without an adult by his side. I do not switch on a night light. By 1 year old, I would persuade him to sleep on a bed in his own room. Of course he won't mind because he was upgraded from cot to bed. He don't mind sleeping in the dark either.

By the time my second son reach 1 year old I told him he could sleep with his brother. A room of their own. They love the idea. I allow them to decorate their room their way. I don't mind having big posters of transformer, pokemon etc in their room, give them some privacy, just like how daddy and mummy need some privacy too.

Every night I would tug them in, tell them stories in their room in the dark. Give them hugs and kisses and leave the room. The first few years they would sleep with their door open. Occasionally they do have nights that they say they could not sleep, or felt scared after a horror movie, I would tell them to close their eyes and think of something happy that had happen to them recently. It works all the time. Both my sons are in their teens now. No more tugging and story telling. Hmmm miss those days. Since birth till now they had never run into my room in the middle of the night or sleep in the same bed as us.

I had a ex-colleague who is in her mid twenties, told me that she and her sister sleeps with her mum every night since birth. Her dad sleeps in another room. Told me her dad is always so grumpy and gets agitated at almost every single thing. Hmmm perhaps I should have told her maybe her dad lack sex. She looks so naive I don't have the heart to tell her that. Ha ha ha.

Don't you think married couple should have more intimate time together? I believe if you want a long lasting happy marriage, you should tread your spouse like how you tread him / her when both of you started dating. Sweet and lovely and never think of other stuff except how to make each other happy.

So what's your bedtime story? Something that I think works for me and wanted to share with everyone. Thanks for reading.

Tomato omelette

This is easy to cook. Simple ingredients. Tomatoes, onion, eggs and of course salt and pepper to taste.

I normally remove the skin. Remove the the seed as well, if not the dish would be too watery. Chop the tomatoes. Sliced the onions. Beat eggs. Add salt and pepper to egg. Saute onions. Add tomatoes and eggs and fry. You can either come up with a big round omelette or scramble it. My two teenage sons prefer scramble. It would still turn out to be a bit watery. So I normally would not add cheese. Other omelette I occasionally would add cheese.

Happy trying. Hope you like it. Thanks for reading.

Six Sense

Few months ago, out of the blues, my brother-in-law, who rarely text me on the phone, send me a text message. He said due to so many H1N1 cases in Kuala Lumpur, how do I prevent. He said cod liver oil should help strenghthen our immune system. Ask if I think that is enough. I reply, now a days we eat raw minced garlic. I added raw minced garlic in our rice at dinner time. Even my 12 year old don't mind eating it this way, for health sake. Once you mix it in your rice and eat it with your dishes, it won't taste so bad. We eat like this for about 3 days a week. Not everyday.

A couple of weeks later he send me another text. He said his teenage daughter contracted H1N1 and now under quarantine at home. Not really serious, she recovered in just a few days but still need to stay in her room for at least a week.

Strange. It is like he could feel it coming. Maybe everyone does have some sort of six sense, just maybe we didn't really take note. So do you have that extra sense?

Just wanted to share this strange tale with all of you. Thanks for reading.

D.I.Y Fish Pond

Click on the photo for clearer view.

My husband made this pond himself. He bought all those stuffs like cement, wood plank etc. At first it look like a rectangle container made of cement. Later he adds the sides on top and I added some potted plants and there it is, a lovely fish pond.

Took him about few days to come up with the pond and about a week to leave it to dry. After it was dried properly, we have to add water and check for leakage. It did leak at first, after some patches here and there, finally, perfect. After a week or so, filled it with water and added some small fishes to test it out to see if it is "fish safe".

We still have those small fishes in it. Maybe by end of this year, we might change to rearing "koi" fish. The pond is about a year (plus) old by now. We keep changing and adding plants and those lovely tiny "animals" around the pond.

Guess now it serves like our "doll house". We would decorate and redecorate and never satisfy. Another hobby to keep both of us busy and happy too. Something to show off and be proud of it. That's the different between D.I.Y and ready made stuffs. Especially when neighbors, family and friends drop by and praise the pond, we would proudly say that we did it ourselves.

Just something to show off. Thanks for reading. Hope you are inspired to make your own fish pond too. You can get all the information needed from the internet.
